THE GLASGOW WEEKEND was a 3-day festival of innovative, diverse and highly acclaimed visual art, film, performance, music and design from Glasgow, presented at the Volksb\u00fchne Theatre and BQ, during Berlin Art Week 2013. The Glasgow Weekend<\/em> featured new works from Turner Prize winning artists Douglas Gordon<\/strong>\u00a0and Richard Wright<\/strong>, \u00a0and coincided with an exhibition of new works by internationally renowned artist David Shrigley\u00a0<\/strong>at BQ. Other highlights included\u00a0Franz Ferdinand<\/strong>, playing songs from their eagerly anticipated 4th<\/sup> album, Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action<\/em> (20th<\/sup> September), Torsten Lauschmann<\/strong>‘s site-specific cinema performance At the Heart of Everything a Row of Holes<\/em> (21st<\/sup> September) and nightly parties hosted by acclaimed avant-garde Glaswegian DJ duo OPTIMO<\/strong>. The programme also showcased music, performance and sculptural interventions from emergent Glasgow-based artists Jamie Bolland<\/strong>, Romany Dear<\/strong>, Raydale Dower<\/strong>, Ashanti Harris<\/strong> and Julia Scott<\/strong>. Newly commissioned publications by Prawn’s Pee<\/strong>\u00a0(Ben Ashton<\/strong>, Rob Churm<\/strong>, Oliver Pitt<\/strong> and Rebecca Wilcox<\/strong>) and The Burning Sand<\/strong> and merchandise co-designed by Richard Wright<\/strong> and April Crichton<\/strong> will form part of a pop-up presentation in the Volksb\u00fchne by Glasgow gallery and bookstore Good Press<\/strong>. In BQ\u2019s showroom (apartment upstairs from the gallery) and the Pavilion adjacent to the Volksb\u00fchne, there was a trio of exhibitions entitled VALISE (18th<\/sup> <\/em>-22nd<\/sup><\/em> September), curated by Glaswegian galleries David Dale Gallery<\/strong>, The Duchy<\/strong> and Sarah Lowndes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Friday 20th<\/sup> September<\/strong><\/p>\n

Raydale Dower, Beethoven\u2019s 5th (X8), performed at The Glasgow Weekend (2013)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Raydale Dower<\/strong> opened the weekend with a performance in the Volksb\u00fchne Theatre’s Stern Foyer (Foyer of the Stars), recreating a written account of a 1920 Stefan Wolpe Dada performance using 8 copies of Beethoven 5th on 8 turntables at various speeds.<\/p>\n

The action then moved to the Roter Salon (Red Salon) for the launch of Volume 2 of bi-annual art magazine The Burning Sand<\/strong> (edited by Sarah Lowndes, designed by Sophie Dyer & Maeve Redmond) and limited edition publication by Prawn\u2019s Pee<\/strong> (Ben Ashton \/ Rob Churm \/ Oliver Pitt \/ Rebecca Wilcox).<\/p>\n

The launch event featured a musical performance by Torsten Lauschmann<\/strong> and Richard Wright<\/strong>. \u00a0Lauschmann, whose musical alterego is Slender Whiteman and Wright, who plays guitar in Glasgow alt-pop band Correcto, presented a new musical collaboration with player piano and electric guitar.<\/p>\n

A second musical performance followed, by Jamie Bolland<\/strong>\u00a0and Raydale Dower<\/strong>. \u00a0Bolland and Dower, from anarchic Glasgow band Tut Vu Vu, presented new Musique Concr\u00e8te compositions including a revisiting of the work of Erik Satie.<\/p>\n

Warm up sounds from avant-garde Glaswegian DJ duo Optimo<\/strong> (Keith McIvor and Jonnie Wilkes, aka JD Twitch and JG Wilkes) in the Stern Foyer presaged the arrival on the main stage of\u00a0Franz Ferdinand<\/strong>, playing songs from their back catalogue and eagerly anticipated and critically acclaimed 4th<\/sup> album, Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action<\/em> (2013)<\/p>\n

The evening concluded with a Franz Ferdinand Afterparty hosted by\u00a0Optimo<\/strong> in the Roter Salon.<\/p>\n

Saturday 21st<\/sup> September<\/strong><\/p>\n

The evening began with a film installation the Volksb\u00fchne’s Third Floor Theatre by Douglas Gordon<\/strong>, Silence, Exile, Deceit<\/em> (2013). \u00a0In this\u00a0\u2018industrial pantomime\u2019 shot on location in Essen, using blinding light and the deepest darkness, sounds and visual impressions, Gordon poses the question of \u201cwho has a say\u201d\u2014artist, performer, or spectator.<\/p>\n

The action then moved to the Stern Foyer where Ashanti Harris<\/strong> presented a solo dance performance, a new dance work exploring cultural appropriation and representation, combining elements of traditional dances performed in Barbados and by Amerindians in Guyana with longsword dancing practiced in Yorkshire, England.<\/p>\n

This performance was followed by a live dance performance by Romany Dear<\/strong>, You I Move, You Move<\/em> (2013),\u00a0exploring the communicative power of the body. \u00a0The piece was choreographed by Romany Dear and performed by Romany Dear<\/strong>, Ashanti Harris<\/strong> and Julia Scott<\/strong>, the three co-founders of Glasgow Open Dance School (GODS).<\/p>\n

The programme of live events continued with a Film installation in the theatre’s main auditorium by Torsten Lauschmann, At the Heart of Everything a Row of Holes<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>(2011 (2013 revision)). \u00a0This dazzling site-specific cinematic performance responded to the specific architecture of the Volksbuehne\u2019s art deco theatre, showcasing Lauschmann\u2019s interest in the earliest forms of magical entertainment and the latest technical innovations.<\/p>\n

The evening concluded with a party in the Stern Foyer hosted by\u00a0Optimo<\/strong> (Keith McIvor and Jonnie Wilkes): an excursion into territories far beyond the accepted boundaries of club music.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Elsewhere in the building:<\/strong><\/p>\n

New site-specific wall drawings by Richard Wright<\/strong>, Torsten Lauschmann<\/strong>\u2019s Digital Clock (Growing Zeroes)<\/em>, Jonnie Wilkes<\/strong>\u2019 neon Optimo<\/em>\u00a0and Espacio<\/em> signs and Chandeliers<\/em> by Raydale Dower<\/strong>\u00a0were installed in the theatre building for The Glasgow Weekend. Open from 6pm on both evenings was a pop up shop in Stern Foyer run by Good Press<\/strong>, selling publications and The Glasgow Weekend merchandise designed by April Crichton<\/strong> and Richard Wright<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
